So maybe there never was a big bang and the universe has existed forever. Two physicists from Princeton and Cambridge university have developed a new cyclic universe theory to explain the structure of the universe. In what is being described as 'the new big idea in cosmology' Turok and Steinhardt describe the universe as two infinitely large parallel sheets or branes. One of the sheets is composed of the matter currently accounted for by physicists. The other sheet contains elusive dark matter.
As our universe expands the sheets stretch out interacting with each other over a microscopic distance via gravity. Finally after trillions of years the sheets finally slow their expansion and begin to move toward one another. When they meet they produce an effect akin to a big bang, which fuels the next expansive phase of the universe. Cool huh! I've made a swf of how I think this thing would work. Any complaints, tell em to Allah and yes the underlying colour of everything is green :)
