Anatomy of an (attempted) Internet Fraud

A friend lets call him ... Luke. Well that is his name so why not. Anyway this
friend fancied himself the film making type and after spotting a good deal on
a digital video camera on www.sold.com.au he proceeded to place a bid on said
camera. Luke won the bid and received an email from Alex Nechipor.

Now Alex is what is technically known as a scumbag and although he listed his
location as being somewhere in NSW on the auction site, he now explained that
in fact he lived in the Ukraine and wanted to send the camera to Luke and of
course get Luke to send the cash to him. After some sleuthing Luke discovered
that the Third Party delivery service Alex was suggesting they use for the transaction
was in fact a site created by Alex himself to further confuse the matter. The
full email trail can be read here.

SECURITY ALERT

November 20 , 2000

SUBJECT: COMPUTER SCAMS---A GROWING PROBLEM IN UKRAINE

The Regional Security Officer for the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv would like to warn
all computer users on a vast increase of computer crime. The RSO has received
numerous complaints from U.S. citizens - approximately 30 in the past 2 months
( from September-November 2000 ) - who have participated in internet auctions
originating in Ukraine and have been cleverly swindled out of their money.

The auctions have been listed on the American website http://www.auctionmac.com
and Yahoo! Auctions. Consumers going on the sites have been offered inexpensive
notebook computers, digital cameras and TV sets. Persons who organize these
scams from Ukraine on Yahoo Auction use their selling location as "Atlanta,
GA", i.e. the United States. When you participate in the auction and are
"chosen" a winner, the seller provides a Ukrainian address and suggests
that the money should be sent via Western Union. The "winner" sends
the money but receives no item! The RSO office has identified at least the following
Ukrainian cities from which scams have originated from: Kiev, Kharkiv, Smila,
Cherkassy. The scam artists are constantly changing their tactics. Lately, the
scam artists have been providing tracking numbers for shipping on the website
http:// http://www.expressmail.com.ua/.

The RSO has reported these crimes, to the local Ukrainian police officials,
but the Ukrainian police authorities do not have the manpower, equipment, or
expertise to combat this growing problem.

The RSO office would also like to call to your attention the "love trap"
on the internet originating from Ukraine. "Innocent-looking" women
from Ukraine are seeking mates in the West. The would be subscribers hope to
"meet your dream women" on the internet and instead are duped into
paying exorbitant internet fees to prolong contact with available women in Ukraine.
In some cases they even sent their "internet girlfriends" money to
meet them somewhere--but they never show up.
