For a moment he felt like a castaway set adrift on a broken raft. Calmly rolling amidst an infinite ocean. Maybe just over the horizon another raft held someone he once knew or cared for but they too looked on at a seemingly endless void. No use yelling. No point paddling. The random currents and sea winds would carry him and everyone else to a prescribed destination. He was sure that the ocean was big enough to prevent anyone from ever seeing anyone else ever again. Some may have made good on their rafts and invited others. Those left alone, slowly drifted. Some took the chance and abandoned it for the open water. It had crossed his mind he wasn’t afraid to admit, at least to himself, but he decided he was too much of a coward to run that risk. What lay beneath the surface terrified him. Leviathans gliding deep below in the darkness. Monsters swimming silently by his outstretched hand as it tested the waters.
